The dog
club was a founder member club of Frampton Cotterell & District
Community Association. Initially it comprised of both
obedience training and ring craft training. Eventually the two
elements separated and the ring craft club moved and found new
premises.
From the very beginning, the Club has been registered with the
Kennel Club. Until the late 90’s the Club concentrated on formal
obedience training. The Club has been a long time member of the
Southwest Obedience League and except for a short break in the 00’s
has had an obedience team competing in the league. In the late
eighties, we even had two teams entered.
During the early 00’s the Club introduced the Kennel Club Good
Citizen Dog Scheme providing useful and sensible training aimed at
the average pet owner. This proved to be very popular and gradually
the Club had to expand into a Tuesday evening as well as the
Thursday to fit in the extra training that was being provided. We
gradually provided classes for GCDS Bronze, Silver, and Gold. In
2002, we introduced the GCDS Puppy Foundation Course.
Providing between six and seven classes over two evenings obviously
put an increasing demand for trainers and gradually more members
became Assistant Trainers and eventually Trainers. This has enabled
the Club to provide more classes and provide support to the
Trainers.
The Club has a long history of putting on dog training
demonstrations for local events. In the 80’s and 90’s they regularly
put on displays at the Frampton Cotterell village carnival and in
later years have given demonstrations for Coalpit Heath Church Fete
and for several years have put on a display at the Iron Acton May
Day celebrations.
The club
also supports a charity which the members chose and at present it
supports "Hearing Dogs for The Deaf". To date the we have raised
£5,000.00. In the past we have also raised money to select,
train and place a dog with someone with Epilepsy and
each year
money is collected and food bought and given at Christmas to the
Bristol Dogs’ Home, along with other food donated by Club members.
